It’s amazing to see how far I’ve come.
I recently entered my 50th year while also celebrating my children’s 26th, 28th and 30th birthdays. In the same year our family welcomed three new souls into our clan and suddenly I became a granny! How blessed I am! Today I live life with ease and my days are filled with energy, vitality and good health.
I am truly grateful for the chance to enter this new chapter of my life fully healed in body, mind and soul, because 30 years ago my life and health looked completely different.
I grew up in the seaside town of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, with a somewhat dysfunctional family and an even more dysfunctional relationship with food. When, at the age of 14, my mother left our home, my world crumbled into a downward spiral that eventually resulted in a dangerous eating disorder. Four traumatic years later, my family was forced to hospitalise me when, at 18 years old, I weighed only 32kg.
Back then the rehabilitation process for an eating disorder looked more like torture than treatment and when I was eventually released I was no healthier than when I arrived. Although my family, thought I was “cured”, I secretly continued the cycle of binging and starving myself, doing extreme damage to my body.

Although my family, thought I was “cured”, I secretly continued the cycle of binging and starving myself, doing extreme damage to my body.
Over the next few years I would give birth to my three beautiful children, and although I remained “strong” for them on the outside, on the inside I was suffering deeply. I was puking daily and, as a single mother, the stress of raising a family on my own was taking its toll.
My body was on the verge of collapse. I suffered blackouts due to low iron levels and dangerously low potassium. I had almost no energy and experienced terrible mood swings and depression.
I knew that something had to shift – I simply couldn’t go on like this. I also knew that traditional treatments that attempted to treat the eating disorder without going to the core of my issues wasn’t going to work.
I had to do the inner work – my life depended on it. And so, as I entered my 30s, I began my journey of self-healing.
I began to immerse myself in alternative healing methods and modalities such as reiki, sound healing, yoga and meditation. As my journey unfolded I came to know my Guides and, slowly but surely, began to see my body as a temple that deserved to be honoured. I fed my body with raw, plant-based foods and treated her with the love and respect she deserves.
Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t an easy process.
There were many times that I fell down and had to pick myself up again. But as time went on and I delved deeper into my self-healing practices, the falls became less frequent until one day I realised I had healed myself of my eating disorder once and for all! I was free!
I celebrated by lighting candles, honouring my Guides and, above all, honouring myself, for I had truly healed myself.
